| Pathway of Blood | |
| Superior vena cava | receives blood from the head and upper body and drains it into the right atrium |
| Inferior vena cava | receives blood from the legs adn trunk and drains it into the right atrium |
| Coronary veins | return deoxygenated blood from myocardium to coronary sinus |
| Coronary sinus | large vein on the left posterior heart between atria and ventricle, receives venous blood from theveins within myocardium and drains into the right atrium |
| Right atrium | superior chamber of the heart that receives blood from the vena cavae and coronary sinus |
| Right tricuspid valve | located beetween right atrium and right ventricle, prevents backflow into right atrium during ventricular contraction |
| Right ventricle | right inferior portion of the heart, sends blood to the pulmonary trunk |
| Pulmonary (semi-lunar) valve | prevents backflow of blood from the pulmonary trunk to the right ventricle during ventricular relaxtion |
| Pulmonary trunk | a large vessel on the anterior superior portion of the heart that receives blood form the right ventricle and directs to the lungs via the pulmonary arteries |
| Pulmonary arteries | paired branches of the pulmonary trunk that direct deoxygenated blood to the lungs to be oxygenated |
| Pulmonary veins | two vessels from each lung that return oxygenated blood to the heart's left atrium |
| Left atrium | receives blood form the lungs via the pulmonary veins |
| Left bicuspid valve | located between atrium and ventricl eon the left side, prevents backflow of blood into the left atrium during ventricular contraction |
| Left ventricle | composed of an unusually thick myocardial wall for contraction against high pressure |
| Aortic valve | three half-moon shaped cusps that prevent backflow of blood from the aorta to the relaxed left ventricle |
| Ascending aorta | receives blood immediately from the ascending aorta, supplies blood to the myocardium |
| Aortic arch | curved portion of the aorta that extends superior and posterior to the pulmonary trunk |
| Descending aorta | portion of the aorta that descends from the aortic arch and continues inferiorly until it divides into the common iliac arteries |
| Arteries from the Aortic Arch | |
| Brachiocephallic artery | unpaired vessel origination from the aortic arch that supplies blood to theright arm and head through the right subclavian and right common carotid arteries |
| Left common carotid artery | middle branch origination from the aortic arch, supplies the left side of the neck and heard through the external and internal carotid arteries |
| Left subclavian artery | the last branch of the aortic arch, supplies the left upper limb through the axillary artery |
| Ateries of the Neck and Head | |
| Left common carotid artery | see above |
| Right common arotid artery | one of two branches of the brachiocephalic artery, delivers blood to the right side of head and neck |
| External carotid artery | paired artery located anterior to internal carotid artery, divides into arteries such as the facial artery that supply all structures of the head except the brain |
| Internal carotid artery | paired artery located posterior to the external carotid and lateral to the phayrnx, enters the skull via the carotid canal of the temporal bone, suplpies the orbit and cerebrum |
| Arteries of the Upper Extremity |
| Subclavian artery (right and left) | paired artery located inferior tot the clavicle, supplies upper limbs through the axillary artery: the right subclavian artery is one of the two branches of the brachiocephalic artery |
| Axillary artery | derived from the subclavian artery, it passes through the armpit region and gives rise to the deep brachial and brachial arteries |
| Brachial artery | a continuation of the axillary artery, this artery descends the medial side of the humerus then branches into the radial and ulnar arteries at the anterior elbow region |
| Radial vessels | includes a branch of the brachial artery that descends the radial side and supplies the forearm |
| Ulnar vessels | includes a branch of the brachial artery that descends the ulnar side and supplies te forearm |
| Branches of the Descending Aorta | |
| Intercostal artery | arterial branches of the internal thoracic artery, supply the intercostal muscles |
| Celiac trunk | short vessel arising from the descending aorta inferior to the diaphragm, divides into three branches |
| Superior mesenteric artery | arising from the descending aorta inferior to the celiac trunk, supplies the majority of the small intestine and part of the large intestine |
| Renal artery | a branch of the descending aorta that supplies the kidneys |
| Gonadal artery | paired branch of teh descending aorta at the L-2 level that supplies the gonads |
| Inferior mesenteric artery | unpaired branch of the descending aorta located immediately superior to the bifurcation into the common iliac arteries, supplies part of the large intestine and the rectum |
| Common iliac artery | paired branch of the descending aorta, supplies lower extremities and divides into the internal and external iliac arteries |
| Arteries of the Lower Extremity | |
| Internal iliac artery | deep branch of the common iliac artery that supplies the genital organs and gluteal muscles of the pelvic region |
| External iliac artery | superficial branch of the common iliac artery that continues as the femoral artery, supplies the muscles of the thigh |
| Femoral artery | an extension of the external iliac artery after the iliac traverses the inguinal ligament, supplies the muscles of the thigh |
| Deep Femoral artery | a branch of the femoral artery that supples the posterior thigh muscles |
| Popliteal artery | continuation of the femoral artery in the region of the posterior knee, supplies the knee joint, divides into posterior and anterior tibial arteries |
| Anterior Tibial Vessels | derived from the popliteal artery, supplies the extensor muscles of the lower leg, ankle and dorsal side of the foot |
| Posterior Tibial Vessels | supplies the flexor and fibularis muscles of the lower leg, sole and toes |
