- Eating paper in search of missing nutrients. Why would this seemingly normal woman be craving paper on a daily basis?
- The Couch Isn't Making You Fat. Today's couch potato lifestyle has been blamed for skyrocketing rates of obesity, but the cause of this trend may have more to do with the potato than the couch. An analysis of 20 years of published data on people's daily energy expenditure indicates that overeating, rather than a sedentary existence, is the major cause of the industrial world's obesity epidemic.
Two summers ago I visited Africa, Swaziland and England. I was impressed with how few overweight people I saw. (The ones I saw were probably tourists.) People walked everywhere and there was no advertising for weight loss or body surgery. America has a problem! We are reliant on our vehicles for so much when we could be walking. As a nation we would be so much healthier physically and reduce car emissions at the same time. Instead of eating healthy and more physical exercise we want a quick fix to restore our bodies to the "ideal" image with surgery or radical dieting of pills and shakes. The American lifestyle is not the greatest in the world. Africa had a shortage of clean water, plumbing and electricity, but no obesity. It has other issues. Swaziland had limited education and lack of modern facilites but no obesity. England had problems with teeth! Missing and broken and stained. No one seemed to care or notice. They have their own issues, but no obesity. In all three of these places, if they wanted to get somewhere, they walked there. I think America can learn from this.
