The "gluteus maximus" (latin for '''buttocks'' and '''largest''').
It is the heaviest and the largest of all the gluteal muscles. It is the main extensor of the thigh. It is a very common site for intramuscular (I.M )injections.
Origin: iliac crest, sacrum, and coccyx
Insertion: iliotibial tract of fascia lata and linea aspera of femur
Action: extends and rotates thigh laterally
