Description of Injury

Tendon below the patella breaks. When the patellar tendon ruptures, the patellar loses it affixed support on the tibia. The patellar then moves superiorly and the quadriceps muscle contract because the patellar tendon is no longer together. patellar tendon rupturepatellar tendon rupture

Quad muscles are no longer able to extend the lower leg, because there is no longer an attachment. You will notice a lot of atraphy to these muscles.

The rupture of the patellar tendon causes the patellar to lose its position.

Cause of Injury
Jumping hard, or stressfull bending of the knee.

Treatment

Surgically fixed by drilling holes into the patella, and threading the tendon back through the holes and tieing them off. Usually the surgery is done as outpatient or a patient may have to stay overnight. A lot of physical therapy will also follow surgery. It is about a year before you are back to 100%.patellar tendon rupture
