Lower Back Pain
May 30 2008, 12:26 AM EDT
I have to agree with Kevin, I have lived with lower back for 15 plus years, I have been told to lose weight so I have lost over 180 plus pounds not the fun way either, and have been told that back surgery is the only cure, but I would rather take my chances with out the surgery. The Vertebrae and Disc's are too sensitive of an area to be cutting up. My dad has had back surgery and it has done nothing for him, and my friend has had spinal fusion and she has worse back pain then before the surgery, so a little physical therapy, chiropractic, and any other alternatives I am all for.

I did the physical therapy and drug therapy for a year. It would work for a month or two and then come right back. I had an MRI and it came back showing that I had degenerative disc disease at the L-5, S-1 level. I had this level fused last October, and 7 months later I feel alot better than I did before. The orthopedic surgeon did tell me that it did have risks, but I am past that stage.

I hear you on that. I hated physical therapy myself. I have degenerative disc disease, I am not having surgery I refuse. I think I have a high pain tolerance though because I hate drugs I work in the pharmacy you think I would love them, but I hate them and haven;t really had to use them. I hate touching my lower back and I cant lay flat on the floor but i still have alot of flexiblilty and try to keep it stretched out and mobile even though I lost an inch in height, the more I stay laying in one position the worse off it gets. There isnt anything they can really do, but I have found that I love the chiropractor though, weird I know, but I see one at least 2 times per year keeps me going.

"Have you tried standing yoga and chair yoga? I can't lie flat on the floor either.. I have lower back pain due to a bad leg injury over 20 years ago. And these kinds of yoga has helped. I also get acupuncture treatments that make a huge difference. Do you find this valuable? |

I have been struggeling with lower back pain these last few weeks, for the first time in my life. I'm sure it's nothing compared to what other people have been through. Do you have any tips on how to prevent further damage?

I have found that hanging on an inverter table does wonders for the back. It stretches the spine and takes pressure off the discs. My wife has a bulging disc, and when she hangs upside-down for a few minutes, the pain goes away. It may not be a permanant solution, but surgery on the back is really harsh and evasive. People I know that have opted for surgery have more or less traded old pains for new ones. An inverter table costs about $200, and would probably be worth every penny if it can help take the back pain away.

I suffer from degentaive disc disease and I also have a hernatied disc at L5-S1. The neurosurgoen told me that the worst thing i could possibly do was to have it operated on because of the new operation they use to fuse them back. He told me instead to strength my core muscles and quads and hamstring muscles. I have suffered with back pain for six years and I swear by exercise. There is also the epidural pain blockers that some pain management doctors will give if the pain is bad enough.

My sister has had back surgery. She still has the pain. I know that the worst thing you can do when you have back pain is lay in bed. You need to keep walking and make sure that you are using good body mechanics. Don't bend at the waist to pick up a pencil, always use your legs. Inverter tables are awesome! helps spine, drains some sinuses and is great for the intestines. A great investment!

I had back surgery in May of 2008 and I am bettter off than I was before surgery. Before surgery I could barely walk I had so much pain in my back and butt and leg.I am all for it. Although I had no choice but to have back surgery or I would of had a paralyzed foot and leg for the rest of my life. I also did physical therapy the year before I had back surgery and that helped alot for a whole year but then it came back. Backs are very prescious so take care of them :) Do you find this valuable? |
