I totally agree that doctors should be more careful about writing prescriptions for pain pills. I work with a doctor, and we've stepped up our communication with other doctor's offices as well, because people with drug-seeking behavior will go to multiple doctors to get more pills. They also require narcotics to have a written signature and be on tamper proof paper, which I think has deterred a lot of abuse. It's definitely an issue that everyone should be aware of though!

Did you also know that some pills your body doesn't digest. People find whole pills in their waste that havent had the capsul dissolved and the pill digested

I would be interested to know what pills and how you learned this! Personal experience at work or an article? Interesting...

I always flush them(whoops!) right after my symptoms are gone. I don't keep anything around for a later date. Did you guys see that Oprah. it was probably years ago, A lady saved all her prescription medication and collected prescription medication from others and would give them out to those that felt like they needed it. She had a suppository that was like 13 years old. Nasty!

To be honest I never really thought much about meds and what to do with them when you are through with them. I just have put them up in my medicine cabinet and at a later date if it was dated way back when then I will just throw them away in the garbage.

A friend of mine's father was on pain pills for a bad knee injury that never quite healed. When he became immune to his lortab, percocet, etc. he finally resorted to cocaine for relief and eventually ended up killing himself. My friend says that, looking back, there's not much that could've been done different for him- his pain was so intense. My point? I'm not sure- it's just a sad thing and there will always be those cases where even the closest of monitoring on the doctors part can only go so far because the pills are necessary. For those who are taking pain meds for other reasons besides pain- maybe because we're in a state where the majority doesn't drink alcohol to get their "buzz", we resort to prescription meds and justify it by saying "but I have a prescription so it's OK". That's quite embarassing for the good old beehive state, though!
